1939 San Francisco World's Fair Commemoratives
This is a set of THREE COPPER Pressed Pennies from a machine that was at the 1939 San Francisco World’s Fair. The designs include: San Francisco Marin County/Golden Gate Bridge/Worlds Greatest Span, Golden Gate International Exposn/San Francisco/1939/A Pageant of the Pacific (Treasure Island), and San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge/Marvel of Suspensions. All three coins are horizontal, and have old-fashioned beaded borders.
They are pressed from the original dies made for the 1939 World’s Fair in San Francisco. A special limited edition of 1939 sets was issued, and the die was closed after this. Each coin is stamped with a serial number on the back, in the format XXXX/1939. All coins are struck on wheat pennies, with the wheat side showing on the back. (No readable dates on front, and all wheat pennies used are from 1940 and later, but you still see the "wheat" back as it would have looked then). The back of the coin shown is for representative purposes only. The coins have had a special process applied so that the wheat design and serial number not only show up without any stain, but you can actually somewhat FEEL the design still left in the coin back. It is a superior process to what you normally see with a stained back coin. Instead of seeing the color, you actually see the COIN.
These coins have INCREDIBLE detail compared to most modern pennies. They are truly works of art. The beads on the borders are quite good looking, and definitely have an old-time feel to them. This set was pressed on clean 100% copper wheat pennies, so that the images come out EXTREMELY sharp. Coins actually look MUCH better than the scan - metal does not scan well. These are bright, shiny coins. Due to the commemorative nature and serial numbers of these coins, I am including insurance in the price because each set has a unique serial number. Item #C201.
